Lately it seems like there is a rampant dissatisfaction growing against Facebook. For some, it’s the lack of filtering of content, and to others, it’s the ever growing rate of censorship to block “fake news” but which sometimes results in blocking legitimate content as well, since it’s mostly done using what I believe are bots. In any case, I’ve seen many people lately asking the question “Are there alternatives to Facebook, which are less controlled or decentralized?”. Well, this was addressed years ago, almost 10 years in fact, by the creation of Diaspora* Project. This project, unfortunately not as successful as many had wished back then, is however, still alive. Myself getting increasingly frustrated at Facebook, and feeling like it has become an extension per se of mainstream medias, I’ve recently went back into the Diaspora world and I’m glad to see that although it’s not as active as Facebook, It seems like it’s getting more active again everyday. You likely won’t find your entire family on there (although for some of us it may be a good thing), but If you are more interested in political discussions and information on a vast array of subjects, you will likely find something interesting on Diaspora*. So, if you are tempted to make the jump, here’s a good place to start:
